It wasn’t long ago when saying Black Lives Matter was considered polarizing and unpopular, especially among brands. Fast forward to Spring 2020, protests began with a global pandemic as a backdrop and many brands rushed to express solidarity to the social issue and movement. I was curious about this shift and began compiling and analyzing how brands were responding to the social issue. I landed on the framework: The Message / The Action / The Reaction to help show brands’ comms plans and strategies. I tapped Julian Cole, Davis Ballard and Stephanie Vitacca to be my collaborators on this living brand tracker. The hope for the resource is that it helps strategists and marketers make the case for brands to take meaningful action to support Black Lives Matter.

The reach and feedback from this deck has been beyond imaginable. It has now been recognized in The New York Times.
